About Summit Housing Development Corporation

The Summit Housing Development Corporation or SHDC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation separate from, but working in conjunction with, the County of Summit Board of Developmental Disabilities (Summit DD). The SHDC was created to allow the Summit DD the ability to access Capital Assistance Funds disbursed by the State of Ohio. SHDC currently owns 78 homes in Summit County and is governed by a Board of Trustees and 4 full-time staff members.

Our Mission

The Mission of Summit Housing Development Corporation is to develop and maintain safe and appropriate housing in an integrated setting for individuals with mental retardation and/or other developmental disabilities.

Our Homes

The location of a potential home varies greatly from situation to situation. Where possible, SHDC will attempt to find a home relatively close to the individual's place of employment in the community, or in the same region where the individual attends workshop. SHDC pursues acquisition of homes that will meet the accessibility and other unique needs of its residents. All homes have fire alarm systems and carbon monoxide detectors installed prior to occupancy. Each home also includes basic kitchen appliances and washers and dryers that are maintained by SHDC.

Repairs and Maintenance

SHDC provides on-going support to providers, and will handle repair and maintenance services, either directly or through a contract vendor.
